What's the future of DJing? Keep playing music.
Favourite app? TouchOSC. An amazing app to control a few programmes through an iPad.
Discovery of the year? My new toy, the new Range Rover Evoque. I love it!
Rediscovery of the year? [Age Of Love's] 'Age Of Love'. I've played it a few times lately and the reaction is still amazing. It's like a new track.
Awkward Moment? Portuguese DJs have to pay a fee to a Portuguese institution to play digital music. Unbelievable and unacceptable.
Style or substance? Both for sure, you get more attention.
Pet Hate? The incompetence of some people.
After several years of hard work, Industria - the club masterminded by acid-tinged tech house artist DJ Vibe - opened in Portugal last year. Its launch has allowed Vibe - probably Portugal's most important and influential DJ - to put his energies into other projects during 2011.
“This year I was more focused on DJing,” says Vibe (António Pereira). “2011 has been great so far,” he continues. “Ibiza, Brazil just finished, USA and Canada, back to Ibiza and still more to come at the end of the year. I am also back to the studio after two years dedicated to the construction of Industria.”
However, as Pereira knows, opening a club is only half the battle - sustaining it is the difficult part, particularly with a DJ career alongside.
“It's not easy to run a club and play as a DJ. Luckily, things are going well. The club is a fantastic underground room with an amazing soundsystem.”
Next year, Vibe will shift his focus from DJing to production, releasing a track with New York DJ Danny Tenaglia and working on new material. “More studio action. For sure!” is how Pereira succinctly sums it up. TRISTAN PARKER
