Style: Serious electronic house music.”
Best known for: “Bedrock record label boss, Transitions radio show host.”
Tune of 2011: Connan Mackasin 'Forever Dolphin Love (Erol Alkan Remix)'.”
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2011: Maetrik has had some amazing releases this year
What's the future of DJing? Hopefully less people impersonating DJs
Favourite app? HootSuite which allows me to update my Facebook and Twitter accounts while I am on the road.”
Discovery of the year? Sarava is an amazing restaurant in Jose Ignacio, Uruguay that serves futuristic food in a rustic setting.
Rediscovery of the year? Rabbit In The Moon 'FLooRi.D.A (Three vs A.Machine A Dub For Strangeways)'. I dropped this at District 36 in NYC and it took the roof off! It's amazing hypnotic house music!
Awkward Moment? I played KaZantip Festival this year and got food poisoning. I played for two hours feeling pretty rough, not knowing if I could make it through the set without making a mess of the DJ booth.
Style or substance? Substance. I'm not a showman behind the decks but people know that I'm 100% focused on what I'm doing and putting the music centre stage. Everyone has a different approach to DJing and this is what works for me.
Pet Hate? Drivers texting and talking on the phone when they pick up from the airport, or going to gigs while trying to break the land speed record! What's the rush? Call them back!
“The quality of tracks from the underground scene this year has been amazing,” John Digweed tells us, showing that his passion for the music he loves remains as strong as ever.
His forward-thinking attitude has been essential to the continued success of his label Bedrock over the past year, and he puts it down to changing with the times: “The digital age has made it easy to access music in good and bad ways, so you have to adapt and put on events and sell merchandise to add extra revenue,” he explains.
As well as keeping up a heavy schedule of Bedrock events and other gigs around the world, John is working on an unusual collaboration. “There is a fantastic project that I have been working on with Nick Muir and a well-known author that is due for release at the start of 2012,” he teases, but that's all the detail he'll divulge right now.
