Lange

Style: “Epic-driving-grooved-progressive trance/house/electro.”
Best known for: “Pioneering UK trance, and kicking arses this year.”
Tune of 2011: Above & Beyond feat Richard Bedford 'Sun & Moon'.”
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2011: Arty.
What's the future of DJing? “A continued shift from beat-matching to 'live remixing/editing' of tracks during sets, and more touch-screen DJ interfaces.”
Favourite app? “Skype on iPhone; essential on the move.”
Discovery of the year? The ocean. I went to the Maldives for my honeymoon; an incredible place.”
Rediscovery of the year? “I've just dusted off a whole load of my old tracks and given them the remix treatment for my new 'Lange Remixed' album!”
Awkward Moment? Discovering halfway through a set that every time I whacked up the booth monitors, it was draining all the power from the main system! Set-up fail!”
Style or substance? “Style is more important. Substance should be more important. Less emphasis is being put on actual production and DJ talent these days compared to the numbers hype. That said, real talent can still shine through, new artists like Mat Zo and Arty have proven this.”
Pet Hate? “Bragging about false achievements; there's a lot of twisted hype out there.”
“I don't listen to that much non-dance, I give my ears a break when I get the chance,” Stuart Langelaan tells DJmag, and that's quite understandable when you take into account the boundary-crossing workload Lange undertakes. “Genres are blending more than ever and I'm loving it,” he explains, “You can't go over a decade in the industry and make the same thing, you'd go mad. It's about striking a balance between past and future.”

With the new 'Lange Remixed' album and the 'LNG' alias (created for his self-described “edgier productions”) in full flow, Lange is already planning ahead.
“I would like to do an LNG mini album and I'm starting to write my third album now, ready for 2012. I've already got some amazing vocalists lined up,” he explains, “and of course it's shaping up to be another manic year of touring!” DAVID MCCARTHY
