What's the future of DJing? I've been using USB on CDJ-2000s and I love it. For me the future is about accessing the music you want quicker and on smaller devices.
Favourite app? WhatsApp. It's great to be able to stay in touch with friends worldwide.
Discovery of the year? Apple TV. I watch a lot of movies and it's fantastic to now watch them streamed right to your TV.”
Rediscovery of the year? Nu NRG 'Dreamland'. One of my all-time favourite trance tunes, which I played almost every gig in Ibiza this year.
Awkward Moment? When the heavens opened and started lashing rain at Dance Valley, and everyone cleared off for shelter.
Style or substance? Substance, because substance lasts. Styles change
Pet Hate? People talking loudly in restaurants/cafés. It does my head in when all you can hear are other people's stories.
It's been a year of extremes for tech-trance DJ John O'Callaghan, spending the first part of 2011 in the studio working on his 'Unfold' album, followed by non-stop touring after its release, including two weeks around South America.
“These were some of the best shows of 2011,” says O'Callaghan, “and it's a great injection of morale when you play in front of people who love the music so passionately. As a whole, 2011 has seen the strongest rise in up-tempo trance I've seen in years.”

Other highlights for O'Callaghan included a packed Ibiza season, again signalling a resurgence of the harder end of the trance spectrum.
“Cream has had a sensational season at Amnesia,” he says, “and clubbers are staying right until the end of the night. I've really noticed that people want to hear more and more banging stuff. Which suits me down to the ground!” TRISTAN PARKER
